Advocacy Collective Asserts to Have Scraped Countless of Audio Tracks from the Streaming Giant

An activist group has claimed to have scraped millions of tracks from the popular streaming service and is preparing to publish them publicly.

Potential Impetus for AI Development

Observers noted the seeming leak could boost AI companies searching for data to develop their models.

A group called Anna’s Archive reported it had scraped 86 million music files from the platform and 256 million entries of metadata such as performer and record names. The company, which carries more than 100 million songs, confirmed that the breach did not represent its full catalog.

“We have identified and disabled the malicious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” stated a Spotify representative.

The Stockholm-based service, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an investigation into unauthorised access found a external actor scraped public metadata and used illicit methods to bypass DRM [digital rights management].

Archive's Declared Goal and Concerns

Spotify does not think the audio taken by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for providing links to pirated books, wrote in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

They claimed the music files represented 99.6% of all music listened to by its listeners and would be shared via ‘torrents’, a means of sharing large digital files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic start,” said Anna’s Archive, which describes its mission as “safeguarding humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

Model Development and Copyright Debate

A composer and campaigner for defending artists’ rights, remarked the breached music would probably be utilized for training artificial intelligence systems.

“Training on illegally sourced data is sadly common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is highly likely to be used training AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site makes references to a large online archive, a vast online repository of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to train its systems.

The co-founder of an artificial intelligence company wrote on LinkedIn that members of the public could in principle “create their own private free version of the service”. The executive added it could also allow tech companies to “train on contemporary music at a large volume”.

Intellectual property law has become a key issue between artists, writers and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Policy Proposals and Reactions

In the UK, artists and writers have protested against a government proposal to let AI companies use protected work without consent unless the owner opts out. Virtually every participant to a government consultation on the idea has supported artists’ apprehensions.

The secretary of state for science, innovation and technology informed parliament this month there was “no clear consensus” on the issue, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this right”. The administration has pledged to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
