American Attack on Caracas Fuels Anxieties of Potential Greenland Annexation.

The latest American strike in Venezuela and the seizure of its leader have renewed apprehension regarding America's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the former president's political movement have allegedly set their sights on the strategically important island in the wake of the events in South America.

Provocative Posts and Official Outrage

Only a short time following the start of the Venezuelan campaign, a prominent right-wing podcaster, who is married to a high-ranking presidential aide, posted a symbolic image. The graphic showed Greenland covered in the stars and stripes, accompanied by cryptic message: "COMING."

This blatant threat to absorb the mineral-rich region, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered swift and strong criticism from Danish officials.

"We are close allies and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is equally Greenland’s and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The diplomat further highlighted that Denmark had significantly boosted its military budget this year, allocating a substantial sum specifically for Arctic and regional defence. "Furthermore, we demand full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Political Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The tensions were additionally complicated by the previous naming of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "honour" to work in a unpaid role to "bring Greenland into the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this envoy commended the administration's decisive move, linking it to the wider "war on drugs."

Ever since returning to office, the American leader has repeatedly unnerved transatlantic allies with his expressed interest in Greenland. The territory is viewed as critically strategic for defence and future mineral exploitation. It currently houses the most northerly US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a notable media interview, the leader declined to exclude the use of armed action to acquire Greenland. This stance comes amid growing global competition in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "very small amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for international security."

Mounting Friction and Local Resistance

In reaction to this constant "drumbeat" of threats, Denmark's security agency took the extraordinary step last month of labelling the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland delivered a unified and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a complex sentiment. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's inhabitants seek self-rule from Denmark, there is also little to no appetite to become part of the United States. The island has had the legal right to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Some analysts are now reconsidering the likelihood of such a move. One policy director focusing in military analysis conceded she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a few hundred or a couple thousand troops inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could intervene about it," she observed.
